<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;">A popular
way to view birds this month is to participate in the 114th annual Audubon
Christmas Bird Count (CBC) with one of Washington's 46 official counts
scheduled between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5, 2014.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;">The longest
running citizen science survey in the world, the CBC provides critical data on
bird population trends. Tens of thousands of participants throughout the
Americas know that it's also a lot of fun.<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;">The count
has become a family tradition among generations, with veteran and novice
birdwatchers armed with binoculars, bird guides, and checklists, often out
before dawn and until dusk, on an annual mission to both make a difference and
to experience the beauty of nature during the holiday season.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;">If you're
just learning bird identification, joining up with others who are more
knowledgeable is one of the best ways to accelerate your education. If you're a
pro at distinguishing Cassin's finches from house finches or sharp-shinned
hawks from Cooper's hawks, join a count to help others.<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;">All of the
official counts are within designated areas, and long-running ones have
traditional spots within those areas to look for birds. But many counts also
include what you might tally the day of the count at your own backyard bird
feeder.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;">Contact the
coordinators listed here by area and count dates to find out how you can get in
on the holiday fun.<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">
habitat are looking for new food sources. Using feeders is one way to attract
the birds in your area, and allows for great birding in your own backyard. Here in western Washington we have many birds
that reside year round, including northern flickers, black-capped chickadee,
dark eyed junco and Anna's hummingbird. Some species are spotted with more
frequency in winter, these include spotted towhee and the varied thrush.
birds, you may attract unintended critters as well. When birds concentrate at feeders they can
become easy targets for raptors and domestic cats. Raptors such as sharp shinned hawks are few
and far between but are fascinating to watch.
Their appearance is an indication of a well-balanced backyard
habitat. If you want to reduce the
likelihood of predation by raptors, place your feeders in areas where an
overhead predator cannot easily see the feeding station, such as under an
overhang or near a stand of trees.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: LucidaGrande; font-size: 13pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-hansi-font-family: LucidaGrande;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: LucidaGrande; font-size: 13pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-hansi-font-family: LucidaGrande;">Domestic cats should be kept indoors to avoid bird predation and
injury to the cat. Your pet cat can
decimate your backyard bird population quickly, and may be a source of stress
for the backyard wildlife you have attracted.
Well-fed domestic cats in the United States kill an average of 1 billion
birds every year. That number doesn’t
account for the loss in other vertebrates such as frogs, mice, snakes, and
other small desirable backyard inhabitants.
Free roaming cats are also injured by wildlife, and have been taken by
the occasional coyote or fox. Keeping
your pet cats indoors is an easy way to avoid the predation.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: LucidaGrande; font-size: 13pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-hansi-font-family: LucidaGrande;">
sources for native birds and many hours of enjoyment for your family. Remember to provide clean, unfrozen water
during the winter as well. During long
periods of freezing temperatures, natural water sources become unusable for
wildlife. Providing clean, unfrozen
water is very important for the survival of your backyard fauna.
One of the best things about fall is the look and smell of
fallen leaves. Brings back memories of
raking them into piles and exploding through those piles as a child. Now, instead of raking those leaves and
putting them in the yard waste container, use them yourself in your garden. Fallen leaves make great mulch, you can even
save them until spring when the new growth needs some extra fertilizer.

Take a look around your yard and find all the places you can
use leaves for winter mulch, then just rake the leaves over that area. If the leaves are too large, you can shred
them a bit to promote faster decomposition.

beneficial microbes, insects, and small critters for winter.

The training is done online with an NWF-provided CD and takes approximately five hours.

Community Wildlife Habitat™ Team Leader:
Once you have registered your own yard as a Certified Wildlife Habitat™, you can take your commitment to the next level by forming a Community Wildlife Habitat team and getting your community certified.

Habitat Steward:
Teach others in your community how to create habitat for wildlife by giving presentations, volunteering to create a Schoolyard Habitats™ site, writing articles for local media or restoring habitat in a public site. Training is in-person and more intense than for a Habitat Ambassador and takes 24 hours, usually over three successive weekends or you can participate in the Woodland Park Zoo Backyard Habitat Classes. Habitat Stewards make a commitment to volunteer for at least 30 hours within the year following their training.

Interested? Many backyard sanctuary managers who use nest boxes leave them up year-round and leave nesting materials in them through the winter, when some birds will use them as nightime roost sites. But migrating birds that use cavities for nesting, like bluebirds, swallows and wrens, will be returning next month and they prefer clean quarters to follow their instincts to build their own nests.

All nest boxes attract insects - mites, lice, fleas, flies, hornets, spiders and more. In small numbers they are relatively harmless to birds, but in larger numbers they can cause injuries and even fatalities to young birds. Inspect all nest boxes to clean out insects and also to remove the old nesting material. Although some diligent and industrious birds will remove old nesting material before building their own particular nest, many more will just build on top of an old nest. That kind of layering can raise the nest dangerously close to the entrance hole where predators might reach eggs or young.

Your inspection may turn up dead nestlings or infertile eggs, which of course should also be removed. Be sure to use protective gloves, maybe even a dust mask, and dispose of everything you find in nest boxes away from the site to avoid smells that can attract predators. Nest box maintenance includes tightening screws, loosening lag bolts, unblocking drainage holes, and generally making sure everything is secure and working right.

If you find a nest box in your collection that year after year goes unused, consider relocating it. It might not be in the appropriate habitat or suitable height location for the species it's built for, or perhaps it's in the right place but is not built correctly. Check the entrance hole size, overall size dimensions, and other factors that are important to, and different for, various species of nest-box-using birds. Details are available at http://wdfw.wa.gov/living/projects/nestboxes/index.html .

If the same nest box turns up dead nestlings or infertile eggs more than once, consider relocation to avoid competitors or predators, or remodeling to protect the species using the box. A predator block - just a one-inch thick piece of wood drilled with the appropriate size hole - mounted over the entrance hole to create a short tunnel into the nest, can deter starlings, raccoons, or squirrels that have chewed the original hole bigger. Another improvement is to remove any perch post projecting out from the front of a nest box. Our native cavity-nesting birds don't need these perches but they are used by more aggressive non-native birds to harass nesting birds.

If you often have earlier-arriving starlings or English house sparrows dominating your nest box site, you may want to plug the entrance hole until later this spring when martins or swallows or other native species arrive. Small paper cups and other such plugs work well. Remember to remove the plug as soon as you see your "target" species return to the area, or when you otherwise learn of its return to your area. (Online birding chat groups can be a good source of news about migratory bird movements.)

If you watch a nest box closely enough this spring to know when birds have finished raising a brood, you can clean out the box again to encourage another pair to use it or the same pair to nest again. Just don't bother an obviously occupied nest box.Backyard Habitat Workshopshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14528456096651094418noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2864385908267271984.post-82705415835656135412012-02-21T11:25:00.004-08:002012-02-21T11:32:56.252-08:00Spring Backyard Habitat Classes at Woodland Park Zoo<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 314px; height: 209px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijU-Qjg9h1KmHHEXZOY4m-rE6rueg_ipZe1-HEKXamLrzP75v4WW0JXhh7ttgfgA8_gVSv91ddK4MbmGmvSggO32czuykpw6Bkah5Qx65Jgihmrl-0vpOR2YdExZ-O-lKXxpguyNg6fW-t/s320/MatHayward-1018.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5711674101651603986" />At this series of five classes, you'll learn from experts from Seattle Audubon, Seattle Tilth, Washington Native Plant Society and Woodland Park Zoo about how to design your wildlife habitat, attract birds and other wildlife to your backyard, select and care for native plants, manage your backyard sustainably, coexist peacefully with the wildlife you attract, and get your yard certified as a Backyard Habitat.

Cost: $25 per person / $100 for the five-part series if you register before 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14th.

For more information or to register, see the zoo’s Backyard Habitat page: www.zoo.org/backyardhabitat Backyard Habitat Workshopshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14528456096651094418noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2864385908267271984.post-67096377840890772802012-01-19T09:03:00.000-08:002012-01-19T09:14:51.096-08:00King Conservation District 21st Annual Native Bareroot Plant Sale<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZAw71V9OrvdLkdynYiYaEo4RR4P1NkxIWl9I0aCPD7LOV2QJY-AscTPsFfmXAmlBEmgLNkdTOgTrsVrarDMwSrHyGAvdGj95c7l3WhLJxBVdiH-68DXIulEvmaOPC2GJzwkhiCcHhbLfU/s400/640px-Pink_Flowering_Currant_closeup%252C_Ribes_sanguineum.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5699391451655610914" />The King Conservation District offers a variety of native trees and shrubs for conservation purposes such as wildlife habitat, windbreaks, hedgerows, reforestation and stream enhancement. Maintaining high-quality plumage requires a considerable investment. Molt (the replacement of feathers) along with breeding and migration represent the major life-history stages in the annual cycle of birds. Yet until recently, molt has been little studied and, as a result, is often poorly understood by birders. This class will explore how feathers grow, how birds replace feathers, why different species molt at different times, the significance of feather wear, and how understanding these qualities will help you become a better birder. The class includes a field trip to Discovery Park where we will examine plumages for evidence of molt.

Lecture: Thursday, September 15 and 22, 7:00 – 9:00 pm,
Location: CUH – Douglas Classroom
Field Trip: Saturday, September 24th, 7:30 a.m. - noon.
Cost: $50 members/$65 non-members
Limit: 20

Introduction to Birding
Hans de Grys, Chemistry Teacher, Lakeside School
Master Birder
Recipient, MIT’s Inspirational Teacher Award

Interested in learning more about the birds of Seattle and the Puget Sound? Consequently, they have attracted the attention of many scientists who have used them to test theories of habitat selection, mate selection, choice of foods and foraging modes, and the evolution of social systems. The species will be described, with a review of traits that unite them despite their great diversity. Also discussed will be the rich array of investigations that have used blackbirds as subjects, including what has been learned to date and what is yet to be explored. The class will conclude with the blackbirds that live in Washington State, where to find them, and what is special about them.

As strange as it seems, some trees can actually provide more habitat for wildlife when they're dead than when they're alive. Standing dead and dying trees, called "snags" or "wildlife trees," are important for wildlife in both natural and landscaped settings.
Birds, small mammals, and other wildlife use snags for nests, nurseries, storage areas, foraging, roosting, and perching. Live trees with snag-like features, such as hollow trunks, excavated cavities, and dead branches can provide similar wildlife value. Snags occurring along streams eventually fall into the water, adding important woody debris habitat for fish and other aquatic life.

Snags can attract wildlife species to your property that you might not otherwise see.
More than 100 species of our birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians need snags for nesting, roosting, and denning. Hollow snags and large knot-holes are used by Douglas squirrels, northern flying squirrels, martens, porcupines, raccoons, and even black bears. Several species of owls and woodpeckers also use large cavities. Bluebirds, chickadees, swallows, wrens and other songbirds use smaller cavities. Brown creepers, nuthatches, bats, lizards, and mourning cloak butterflies will roost behind loose bark and bark slits for winter warmth and shelter.

Some 45 of our wildlife species forage for food in snags, which are often loaded with insects. Woodpeckers, sapsuckers, flickers, nuthatches, and a myriad of other insectivorous species regularly make snags their dining rooms. Mice, squirrels, jays, crows and other wildlife use snags more like kitchens, for food storage areas.

Some snags make ideal hunting perches for hawks, eagles, and owls. The more open resting perches that snags provide are preferred by swallows, band-tailed pigeons, mourning doves and other colonial birds. And of course the resonating surfaces of some snags are perfect for woodpeckers to announce their presence with their hammering bills during courtship season.

Snags of both deciduous and coniferous trees are used by wildlife. The most favored snag species east of the Cascades are ponderosa pine, western larch, quaking aspen, and paper birch; west of the Cascades, Douglas fir, western red cedar, big-leaf maple and cottonwood snags are highly used. Softwood trees such as fir tend to make better food foraging trees, while hardwood trees are sometimes better for nesting cavities.

Of course if not managed properly, snags can pose a risk to people and structures. If a dead or dying tree threatens something that can be moved, such as a swing set or patio furniture, consider moving those items before cutting the tree down. An alternative to eliminating the entire tree is to remove only the dangerous sections.

Consulting with a certified arborist experienced in wildlife snags is recommended. These professionals can determine what part of a tree is a hazard and provide management options to reduce or eliminate any risk. Remaining parts can be removed over time. Often, once the unsafe limbs or portions of the trunk have been removed, the tree is safe.

Retain live trees and tall shrubs near a snag to protect it from wind and provide a more complete environment for wildlife. In urban areas, tall snags are best located away from high activity areas, where they won't pose a hazard if they fall. Trees that lean away or are downhill from structures and other areas of human activity present little or no risk.
When a tree must be cut down, maximize its habitat value by placing as much of the debris as possible near the area where the tree was removed. In hot, dry areas, move the material into the shade of nearby trees or large shrubs.

You can create a snag from trees that are hazardous or problematic, like ones with forked tops or disease or invasive roots threatening a drainage or septic system, or individual trees in a group that needs thinning. Like landscaping rocks and boulders, snags can add interesting, artistic angles to your property.
